When I do art, I pray and I wait. I wait for something to come, not so much a direction, but a feeling or maybe better, a
knowing. It's not an all-at-once thing. I usually need to make a mark, or choose a color before I can know the next thing to
do. One mark leads to the next, one color to the next. My art is not complete until a certain aesthetic is reached. I never
know how long is going to take. Sometimes I will stop after a few minutes and start it again the next day. Sometimes this can
go on for months or years until it's finished. Sometimes I think a painting is finished and then I come back a month later and
discover that I want to continue working on it. In a sense it was complete but then I saw something new, a shift in direction
or composition, or maybe it was a new link or symbol developing.
I enjoy visiting art galleries and museums and I am sure that art history and the study of major art movements, influence my
'art aesthetic' but I think it goes deeper. Film, music, poetry, philosophy, theology, nature, science and technology. All
these things influence, but the dominant thing is relationships. Relationships with friends and family but also with the
ever-present author of creation. It's that deep yearning of the soul under His influence.
There is a road from the eye to the heart that does not go through the intellect. G.K. Chesterton
